This was in the footnote when I sent a message to one of the mega booksellers.  My message doesn't actually need a response, but ...

... Is it me?  Is it eBay?  Or, bless his cotton socks, is it the seller?

Bless his cotton socks, I've had an automated reply ...

'Thank you for your e-mail. Firstly, we are not really out of the office until 2014 but eBay makes us show a date!'  There was more in the message.

"eBay makes us show a date" for what, and why?

Can any of you sellers explain what is going on?

Are any of their listings showing holiday settings?

It sounds as if they have used the 'out of office' message, to avoid having to answer questions. What they should have done was change a setting in their preferences to stop buyers sending them questions - though why a seller would want to stop questions from prospective buyers I really do not know!

I would have thought if the seller is "away from the office" in March 2014, that the earliest they would need to mention it

would be February 2014 - and THEN maybe put an exact date on it.

I think the problem lies with the seller.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.  In fact the seller did respond at the weekend, as promised in the automated reply.  It was a very well expressed message which gave a satisfactory explanation of the problems I raised with him.

I still have no idea why he chooses to include the March 2014 bit when a message is sent.
