Returns

Good Morning, 

I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S5 and basically to cut a long story short it's defective and i need to return it. Now, the seller states that items can be returned within 14 days from recieving the item, that would be 02/10/2015. I opened a return request today 07/10/15 and ebay is saying that if the seller doesnt contact me they'll start helping out from 15/10/2015. So according to what the seller stated i'd have to return the item by 16/10/15 but according to the request return i entered the seller has the option not to get back to me and Ebay will only start helping from 15/10/15 which would then be too late! any help please? it's the first time i've ever needed to return something.
