Help!!! I use google chrome as my browser but this week all these pop up adds and questionnaires have appeared how do I get rid of them? They are causing the browser to freeze all the time. Could it be related to a new home page for a different search that suddenly appeared? I aren't exactly computer savvy

You could have just picked up some annoying nasties the need removing. I suggest you download, install, and run both of these programs then reboot your PC. They pretty much take care of things with you only needing to click one button and both are good about not messing up your system. Get the program from the link below so you'll know you aren't getting a nasty look-alike.
Ccleaner - gets rid of cookies and all sorts of temp files you no longer need
Malwarebytes - gets rid of all sorts of spyware

Interesting that a 2 1/2 year old thread has revived itself - obviously still relevant.
I suspect that any suspicious pop-ups should still prompt scans with (at least) one's antivirus, Malwarebytes and ADWCleaner.

If you are running Chrome then download and run an extension called 'adblock plus'.
Stops all the nasties in their tracks.
