A little more info required, please.

Did the payment fail after you'd sent the item out?

Did the buyer open an ebay item not as described dispute?

I had an email from paypal to say that the bank said the payment was unorferized. so told them i had sent it gave them a copy of the postage, i also told them that the item had been received and that the buyer had given me positive feedback. I got a message today to say that they had paid the bank back. I dont know what to do next.

You would need to be able to supply pay pal with  recorded postal tracking showing delivery to the buyers pay pal address to be able to appeal the reversal.

If you can't you loose I'm afraid.

Okay, that's a chargeback, an unauthorised payment claim.

All you need to provide PayPal with is a proof of posting slip. Is that what you gave them?

If so, you are covered under PayPal Seller Protection against this.

Section 11.7 of the PayPal User Agreement has a neat little table in it telling you what PayPal requires under varying circumstances:

https://cms.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/marketingweb?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=ua/UserAgreement_full&locale.x=en_GB#11.%20Seller%20Protection%20Programme

If PayPal won't accept your proof of postage, direct them to their own small print. :-D

I think Paypal require proof of delivery (i.e. that the item was sent by trackable means).

I don't think Proof of postage will be enough

If it was an eBay sale, it should've been eligible for Seller Protection.

Check out the link to the PayPal UA I've posted.

May be I am wrong and the rules have changed?

When a sale of mine was suject to a Chargeback, about a year ago, I lost as I could not prove delivery.

I didnt have proof of postage

Ah, that's a shame, but it explains why you weren't covered by Seller Protection.

You can contact the buyer and let them know that, as the payment has now been reversed, the item requires payment.

Send them a PayPal invoice - log into PayPal, click on the Request Money tab and tick the box that says 'goods'. Put the eBay title and listing number in the text field, and send it off to them.

I can't comment on your particular case, all I can do is point out, once again, that it's clearly mapped out in the PayPal UA that proof of postage is required for a chargeback scenario. :)

Its always been my understanding that you need proof of delivery,in cases of chargebacks,(despite the UA) https://www.paypal-marketing.co.uk/safetyadvice/ChargebackGuide.htm

Not for an ebay item. :)

This thread is a good illustration of how the Seller Protection/chargeback/proof of posting scenario works, there've often been times when PayPal CS get it wrong, then backtrack when the UA is quoted at them:
