Buyer has asked for a refund - what do I do now please?
Sep 13, 2012 06:20 PM

Hi,

I recently sold a handmade item on ebay. It was new and unworn and ready to ship. Anyway, I politely request on my listings that buyers make payment via within 3 days of auction end. That way, if they don't pay I message them to find out whether they want the item still. If they have a problem with payment they message me to let me know and all is fine.

Anyway, I sold my item and got a message from the buyer that they were going away and couldn't make payment for a week. Soon as they returned they made payment and I sent the item via 1st class recorded delivery. I received a message today from the buyer to say they received the item but it doesn't fit - and they return it and get a refund. I have agreed the refund but I would like the item returned to me first.

Is this okay to ask? I've seen similar posts on the forum and they do say the seller should receive the item back first, before issuing a refund. I want to be sure that this is definitely something I can do. I've refunded £5 already to show goodwill to the buyer, and advised them they will receive the rest of the refund plus postage charge, once I receive the item back. Is this okay to do?

I hope I'm not breaching anything. I take my ebay reputation very seriously. And what do I do regarding feedback?

Many thanks for any advice / clarification you can offer.

Really you should have waited to make any refund until you had received the item back from the buyer.  You don't have to refund their return postage and they should send it back by recorded delivery so that you can be sure that it's been sent.

never refund any money until you get the item back. Buyer must return using online tracking only at there expense  Why did you refund £5.00 would a shop before getting there item back.

you say to pay in 3 days and then you email them why. Buyers have 4 days to pay in which time ebay sends 2 invoices you can open a non payment dispute in 4 days after end of auction then close after a further4 days to get your fvf back.

You can ask that buyers pay within 3 days until the cows come home but it's just a waste of time.

Buyers have 4 days to pay before you can do anything about it.

If you are a private seller, you don't have to accept returns just because an item doesn't fit.

Some buyers will open a dispute with a made up excuse.

I think this buyer has messed you arpound right from the beginning.

You should have opened a non payment dispute after 4 days.

Some buyers are getting away with far too much .

Despite your disclaimer on your listings you ARE a business seller and should be registered as such and inform HMRC.

Buying, or making stock to sell makes you a business seller no matter what you say. It is a matter of law, not your opinionn I'm afraid.

you should read this very carefully as HMRC are coming down quite hard on unregistered businesses.
